Women have recently started to be given recognition in the name of surfing. For many years, surfing was considered to be more of a male sport. This was because of the difficulties involved in riding the board on water. However, with the increasing number of female contenders in big world tournaments, more and more women are slowly making a name for themselves in the field of surfing.

But, in reality, women have been enjoying surfing for several years. In fact, during the early 1800s, etchings of Polynesian women surfers were found. Furthermore, one of the most popular tales about females in surfing was about a woman named Kelea, whose surfing prowess captivated an Oahu chief in Maui. There is also a legend told about a woman surfer who was the very first person to surf in Australia.

Today, a long line of women who can perform tricks and stunts as well as male surfers can be found in a lot of surfing competitions around the world.
